wasn't there some talk about a seperate GD forum?

might ease up on the 'what is the best c# that jerry ever played on a tuesday night' discussions. interesting as that may be, this has been swamped with grateful dead stuff.

just wondering,
-UJ

PS i think it is annoying to refer to your favorite band, dead or otherwise, as 'the boys'.

You mean for the "where'd all the SBDs go" posts? That's a tool I'd be interested in. ;)

OK, you got me on that one...
i was thinking more along the lines of;
"..and another thing, is it absolutely essential to your survival to have multiple complete copies of both aud and sbd recordings for every one of the 2354 GD performances?" :)
looking forward to the changes, thanks.

Wait a Minute. GDM used to sell a T shirt that said something like:

30 Years
29XX Concerts
# cities
# Men
One Band
The Grateful Dead

I fember seeing those in 1995.

Archive.org hosts 2927 Grateful Dead shows, some are alternate sources or upgraded versions of the same show. A few aren't live shows.

Of the many other artists in the LMA, only a small number have more than a hundred shows represented here, none have over a thousand.
Of the artists archived in 3 digit numbers, most are directly related to or are followers of the GD.

Until the days of whine and rosey reviews about the GD slow down even further since 2005 A.C. (after changes), people will want to compare those songs and notes by the band sharing the largest portion of material here, in a space not GD-centric in spite of the vast amount of GD archived here...

The last place I'd want to discuss my music tastes which include GD shows I've examined and opined about here would be a GD-centric site...
seems like sharing grilled cheese sandwich recipes with seasoned gourmets.
Or preaching to the choir, etc.

It makes sense to seperate live show archive forums discussing your main draw/largest body of work, not so much from other artists but rather from purely technical issues.

"Favorite" is perhaps a better word than "best" for our purposes.

In a proper slang dictionary ;), "boys" or "boy" would have several meanings.
Sometimes used as a term of endearment, the word is often misread or taken literally.

Changing words or addresses is easier than changing minds...

Given the changes this past fall, the Grateful Dead collection no longer shares a main idea of the LMA (a key principle: availability of all material in lossless format), and is formally going to be moved out. So in that circumstance it makes sense for there to be a separate forum GD here, just like other Audio collections have.

um, what? you think that everyone that reads and opines on a GD forum is a 'gourmet' of GD knowledge?

i don't think you thought this one through all the way, boss. The whole point is to keep that stuff bouncing in between people who actually care. why would you want to post GD stuff in a place that WASN'T related to that? In other words, do you go to classical music forums to discuss 'Truckin'? do you go to a site about pick-up trucks and talk about how great that 'Bertha>Wheel' was? i think not.

same logic, big fella.

NO! Have even seen that ESPN managment flier concerning the NBA television broadcasts? The big boss man was tired of turning on the games, and listening to Bill Walton's constant Grateful Dead trivia. Most of their sports audience doesn't care about this stuff...

ESPN didn't offer 2,927 Grateful Dead shows to stream/DL either!

Haven't thought this through?

I beg to differ!

I enjoyed the chance to share my p.o.v. with as diverse a forum as possible who might enjoy a non-Dead head's appreciation of certain aspects of GD stuff which was freely available here.

I have a good idea of what Dead purists prefer, and it's not the Grateful Dead I prefer... whereas there are music fans of more than just the one band (GD) and or style of music that band pioneered who might be open to some GD on their playlists which might tend towards a wider, more diverse selection not centered
around GD jams.

Where to find this receptive forum?
Not in a GD fan forum.
Why not this one, where the GD are certainly a large part (until that ends, soon) of the possible interest but not the only one.

There were until last Fall non-Dead music print zines such as Arthur directing people HERE - pointing out shows on this archive for people who wanted to hear Dead not neccessarily the kind the average Dead-head would recommend.

I concede that (with the changes) it's all a moot point anyway.

It's been fun, for me anyway...
Thanks LMA.

Well, I expect anyone who can bear in mind the broader readership of LMA when bringing the Dead into a discussion of music are not going to have a problem posting thoughtful contributions in either venue. But I imagine the hyper-focused ones who post on some minutae while not even mentioning the band (assuming everyone knows it's always about the Dead) are probably going to get pointed to the more suitable new forum by the larger readership.

A slight deviation from the thread but if you go to www.gdstore.com they have a SYF Commemorative mug with all that printed on it. Quite nice!

That's the one, but I liked the white t shirt better. We can only wondre just how they're sure about 36,000 songs; because there are no set lists for dozens of the early shows.

As for a place to discuss this trivia: it sounds good to me...

Theres a long sleeve white shirt for sale on edeadshop.com for $25. Not a bad deal. The shirt reads 2317 shows and 36,086 songs so some lost soul did a lot of counting or estimated 15-16 songs per show which seems a bit light.

This tool should also handle any message with the words "where are the Garcia shows" and "I just downloaded this show from Etree". Other words to consider are capitalist, money hugry, greedy and public domain.

"The boys in the band"

My dad tells me he remembers first hearing this well known term of endearment around 1928 or so, and understood it to be an old expression even at that time.

If it was good enough for grandpa, then...
